Junior Fleet

Boating is the consummate family activity and is enjoyed by all ages. It teaches children responsibility and the importance of safety. Children learn life-long skills like tying knots, sailing and how to dock a boat. They also learn the importance of nature and protecting our environment. Most children that have boated with their parents become boaters themselves when they become adults.

And boating has a profound impact on childhood development. A recent survey by Impulse Research Corp. found that boating children get a head start over non-boaters in many important developmental areas. They are more likely to be outgoing, leaders, physically active, healthy, happy and demonstrate a more responsible nature.

Throughout its history, the Chesapeake Yacht Club has offered Junior Fleet youth programs. Activities will be age appropriate and available to members’ children, grandchildren, and guests.

Youth events include:

  • Boating safety briefings
  • Sailing school
  • Garden preparation and planting
  • Easter egg hunt and baskets
  • Participation in Flag Raising
  • Fishing and crabbing
  • Knot tying and handling boat lines
  • Kayaking
  • Family raft-up on the Rhode River
  • Junior Fleet craft day
  • Pool party and movie night
  • Holiday party with a visit from Santa

Every year the youth programs are refreshed to include new activities.
